Mudrooms serve as the dedicated space for you to take off your backpack, coat, hat and shoes before entering the home. This space should be durable for muddy footprints and a catchall for personal items and equipment.

I am so excited to finally reveal this mudroom makeover with you all! The goal for this renovation project was to upgrade from boring builder-grade to become more custom and personalized to reflect my client’s style.

BEFORE

AFTER

This was a decent sized mudroom, and by tearing out the closet added a long wall space ideal for built in cabinetry and storage. Upon demo-ing the closet, we discovered the HVAC unit was in the wall next to the garage, which meant our original design had to be tweaked and shortened by 16”. We decided to make the desk area smaller in width and still continue the cabinetry all the way up against the wall.

The desk area was designed to throw your mail, and keys, charge your phone (there are hidden USB outlets in each drawer!) as well as store pet items for easy access. One of my favorite finishing touches is to gift a locally made all natural soy candle hand-poured by TLC Candle Co. If you're someone who loves warm, cozy, pine scents, you will love this "By the Fire" candle.

Selecting durable and waterproof flooring is vital for a mudroom, so that is something to plan for when designing your home. We chose this star + cross marble tile flooring because it is such a fun way to get some pattern into the space, but it still feels timeless without it feeling too overwhelming.

Upon designing these custom cabinets, my client knew she wanted mudroom locker doors and drawers so that everything stored inside them was concealed. The original cabinets prior to the renovation were open concept which meant you could see everything, and let’s be real- who wants to see cluttered coats, backpacks and shoes everywhere (kids can be so messy)?! By adding a mudroom bench, you can sit down while taking your shoes off as well as set your things so they don't get dirty on the floor. Designing the cabinets so they go all the way to the ceiling makes the most of the space by squeezing in the most storage as possible.

Inside the mudroom lockers you will find hooks for hanging coats and an additional shelf for extra storage. We also decided to add outlets in each locker to charge iPads and the vacuum. There are six lockers which meant everyone in the family got their own designated area- woohoo! The upper cabinets are perfect for storing seasonal items and serves as extra storage. By adding drawers below the boot bench, this created space for storing shoes.

We selected this beautiful muted green paint color Evergreen Fog by Sherwin Williams. My client was open to having color in this space, but we didn’t want it to be too colorful which is why we went with this perfect muted tone.

I hope this project provides interior design inspiration for your mudroom ideas in your own home. If you're looking to upgrade your space to become a functional and aesthetically pleasing part of your home- Let's chat!
